What is CNC turning?

CNC turning is a machining process in which the material being formed is mounted on a spindle, which spins while a tool mounted to the machine cuts the material along different axes.

This is one of the most commonly used processes for machining parts to precise tolerances, and is ideal for creating round or cylindrical parts, such as shafts, or cutting threads. CNC (Computer Numeric Controlled) lathes automate this painstaking process.

CNC lathe workers use 3-D computer models of parts to create tool paths that tell machines where to cut, allowing the machine to follow these instructions with minimal human supervision. This can make production faster and more consistent, efficient, and cost-effective.
